The Final Home Tour of Our Lovely Home in South Africa
This final home tour is a bittersweet moment. As I look at these photos, the last ones I took of our lovely home in South Africa, I know it is time to finally say goodbye for good. We sold the house and haven’t lived there since March 2022, but we are living in a rental here in the Netherlands, so we never got the closure that comes with moving into a new house that you own right away.
In our time there, we spent a lot of time DIYing and updating furniture in this house and learned a lot. We have so many good memories of this house, and we will always think of all the good times we had in the eight years we lived there. So let me show you the final home tour of our home in South Africa.
I did not post many pictures of our garden here, but it was a real treat. We had green lawns, beautiful trees and a lot of water-wise indigenous plants. Our kids spent so much time outside, just playing in the yard and swimming in the pool. We sure miss the big garden.
A fun story: Those gorgeous mosaic house numbers were made by my sister. She made a number 59 for our first home, and when we moved after two years, she made two matching 4’s for the new house. We won’t be able to repurpose them here as house numbers, but we brought them with us, and I will use them as outdoor decor.
One thing we loved about the entry is the swallow nest (not pictured here). We loved hearing their bubbly song every year, announcing they were back for the summer and that winter was finally over. I had a lot of plants in the foyer and loved the greenery.

Living Room and Dining Room, Final Home Tour
I love the open feel of these rooms; they got so much light with those big windows! I spent a lot of time crafting at the dining room table, and we loved entertaining friends and family there. And we had a lot of Lego-building marathons on the floor! One of the things I loved the most about these rooms was the lamps; they were so classic.

We pretty much ignored this room for the first six years, it sits right next to the front door, so we just closed the door whenever we had guests. But then Covid hit, and we both spent the year working from home. So at the end of 2020, the home office got a much-needed makeover. You can see the full reveal post over here.
I loved our retro kitchen! We painted all the cabinets, updated the counter tops and added new industrial lamps. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and I am so happy that we updated it when we did and got to spend a couple of years in this fabulous retro kitchen.

Family Room, Final Home Tour
This room did not receive much attention, but we spent a lot of time here, playing games, reading books and watching movies. We had a fireplace which made it incredibly cosy in winter. I created the reading nook for the kids later, but we had many of their toys there initially.
This bathroom started out very green. But we did a complete renovation, which genuinely added value to the home. We had a contractor do the work on this one, but we chose all the finishes, and I drew out the tile layout to ensure everything was as we wanted. The original cord for the roller blinds in this bathroom did not hold up in the harsh sun, so I figured out how to restring them.
Our boys’ rooms were right across from each other. They were spacious rooms, and we all enjoyed playing games and cuddling at bedtime. We painted the built-ins and updated the floors and lamps.

Main Bedroom and Bathroom
We were spoiled in the main bedroom with a dressing room and an en-suite bathroom. This was another light and airy room. We did nothing in the bathroom because we thought no quick fix would make a difference. But before we listed the house, we painted the ceiling, installed new lighting, painted the door and built-in doors, installed a new mirror and built a proper shelf to cover the built-in planter. Let me tell you, we were so sorry we did not do all this sooner. The bathroom was still very dated, but it looked clean and neat.

Back Garden and Porch, Final Home Tour
This was the perfect garden for our kids, with lots of lawn space to play, a bright blue swimming pool and some trees to climb. We also had a small back porch that I had just started to renovate. Marinus built the furniture, and we acquired the decor items with time. It all came together beautifully in this outdoor area. The herringbone rug is from Airloom.
Now it is time for a new home
As I said in my previous post, we bought a new home and are currently renovating it. We still have a lot to do, but we must be out of the rental by the end of this month. We have been working non-stop on weekends while having contractors in the house during the week. The next few weeks will be interesting as we scramble to get the house fit to move in, but we look forward to living there and are so happy to have our own home again. I will show you the new house in the next post, but until then, take care.
